View Full Version : Which scope for my QB78?

I just ordered a QB78 the other day from Archer's Custom Shop. It's actually closer to an AR 2078.

I'm thinking I'd like to use this rifle for indoor target shooting at 30 yards for the winter. Then, in the spring and summer, take it outside to my club's range, which extends back to 100 yards. Being about a 700 fps rifle in .177, I should probably consider the range to be limited to around 60 yards max, 30 yards preferred.

Here is the usual conundrum: if I get a nice target scope, like a 6-24x44, I probably won't be able to hold the gun up to shoot offhand.

If I get a lighter scope, it won't have enough power to allow maximum accuracy on paper.

Here are the ones I'm thinking about so far, heavyweights first:

Simmons 44 Mag, 6-24x44, $150:

3-9x40 Bugbuster, $63:

6x Bugbuster, $50:
http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Buster-6X32-Mil-Dot-Scope/dp/B001BR509C/ref=sr_1_2?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1322157706&sr=1-2

I've had 4x and 6x Bugbusters before, and liked them both. Sometimes, they're a challenge to mount, due to the close ring spacing and they have fat reticles, which is more of a problem on the 4X than the 6x.

Any other suggestions? I'd like to be able to hit a 1/4" bullseye at 30 yards and I'd also like mil dots.

I have many of the scopes you listed above. Are you asking this new scope to do indoor and outdoor duty ?

Yes, indoor and outdoor duty.

I posted what I know about the scopes below.

Simmons 44 Mag, 6-24x44, $150:
http://www.amazon.com/Simmons-Mil-Do...=28I78N2NAL6TG No experience with this one but a friend has one and loves it

Hawke Varmint 6-24x44, $200:
http://www.amazon.com/Varmint-6-24x4...=28I78N2NAL6TG Heard not so good things about this one from my local dealer. Course thats purely second hand. I asked a friend who knows scopes better then I and he likes his very much.

Bushnell Banner 6-24x40, $110:
http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Banne...=28I78N2NAL6TG Just got one for my Mrod but have not mount it. For the money it seemed hard to beat.

Mid-size:

Hawke 3-9x40 AO:
http://www.amazon.com/3-9x40-AO-Spor...156988&sr=1-32 Have this scope and love it but if your shooting at 1" dots at 60 yards it wont cut it, least not to my eyes.

Hawke 4-12x40 AO:
http://www.amazon.com/Hawke-Optics-A...157091&sr=1-64

Hawke 4x32 AO:
http://www.amazon.com/HK3004-hawke-s...157194&sr=1-11 Again I have this one and its great, but not for much more then 15-25 yards for me

UTG 4x32 AO:
http://www.amazon.com/UTG-4X32-Full-...157337&sr=1-22 Have two of these and the same applies to the Hawke 4x32

Small:

3-9x40 Bugbuster, $63:
http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Buster-3-9...157337&sr=1-10 Just picked one of these up two weeks ago. Was looking forward to a compact 6x9. Was very disappointed. Could be a bad one but will have to wait till I exchange it for another

6x Bugbuster, $50:
http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Buster-6X3...2157706&sr=1-2 Great scope ! But may be a little shy on magnification for the ranges your looking for.

Well, I've got my Stoeger 3-9x40 in need of a home. So I think I'm going to try this first, and see how it works for me, magnification-wise.

I can compare it to my sight picture with the Leapers 3-12 I currently have on my X20 and the Hawke 4-14 on my Marauder.

I feel like this is probably a 40 yard gun, if I'm being realistic with myself, so the 6-24 might be overkill. I just need to find out if 12 or 14x is enough.

I mounted the Stoeger mentioned above and fired a few shots. The breech of the barrel was shredding the seal on the bolt. So I took it apart and sent it back to Archer. That's fixed now, and on the way back to me.

Meanwhile, the Simmons I mentioned above in the other post has arrived. I'm going to try that an make it into a proper target rifle.

I have heard lots of good stuff about the Simmons. Think your gonna like it. Sorry to hear about the 78.

I just got a 78 and still need to choose a scope for it.

I just got the barrel back, fixed. Put the gun together and went to mount the scope. However.... the high rings are not high enough to mount the 6.5-20x50 scope. The receiver is only a tiny bit higher than the barrel, so it is going to need extra high rings.

The high rings were just enough to mount my old Stoeger 3-9x40 scope. The medium rings I had before for the 3-9x40 only let the objective clear the barrel by maybe 1/32". Sometimes it would rub a bit.

Whatever rings you get, grumpy, get one level higher than you think you need for a given scope.

I'm getting between 5.5 and 9 FPE, depending on the pellets I use. The most powerful so far are CPH @ 9.2 FPE.

THE NUMBERS:

Pellet / Weight (gr.) / Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs.)

H&N Match / 7.6 / 601 / 6.1
H&N Field Target Trophy Power / 8.8 / 670 / 8.8
Crosman Premier Light / 7.9 / 687 / 8.3

Skenco Pointed Poly Match / 4 / 804 / 5.7
Skenco Blue Arrow / 6.4 / 731 / 7.6
JSB Exact RS / 7.3 / 662 / 7.1
JSB Exact / 8.4 / 646 / 7.8
